Hi everyone, I'm a vegetarian from Tamil Nadu and will be joining an NIT hostel next year. My parents are worried about the mess food because I've always eaten home-cooked regional cuisine—sambar, rasam, that sort of thing. The hostel mess near campus seems decent but expensive if I eat out every day. How do other outstation vegetarian students manage without burning through their pocket money?

Great question. Most NITs/state college hostels now have separate veg messes or at minimum a dedicated veg counter. My advice: (1) confirm the hostel's veg policy before joining; (2) the standard mess is typically ₹3000–4000/month for adequate nutrition—not expensive in the long run; (3) if mess doesn't suit you, three students can rent a small kitchen space nearby and meal-prep together for ₹2000–2500 each. Food co-ops are common and totally doable.

But here's what worked: I opted into the hostel mess (saves ₹2500–3500/month) and learned to cook 2–3 simple curries myself in the common kitchen on weekends. Dal, mixed veg curry, chutney—nothing fancy. Plus, hostel mess usually has at least one veg option daily. Join a cooking group with other veg roommates; you'll pool resources and feel less homesick too.

My son (also vegetarian, from Andhra) had the same worry. We found that the hostel mess quality varies by college. Before admission, I'd recommend: ask the hostel warden directly about veg meal variety and ask current residents (via college Facebook groups) about their experience. We also send him homemade achar and pickle from home once a month—boosts morale and adds taste without extra cost. It's doable, honestly.
