NEET counselling: government vs private med college, fees and bonds

My daughter scored 550 in NEET and is getting calls from private colleges asking for 15-20 lakhs upfront. We're middle-class and can manage it, but I'm worried about bond clauses and whether a government college would be better financially even if she has to wait for a lower rank in a second round. Other parents in our colony say different things. What's the reality here?

One thing parents often miss: check if the private college is MCI-approved (now NMC). Some smaller private colleges have spotty recognition abroad, which matters if your daughter wants to practice in the US or UK later. Also, ask about hidden costs—some colleges charge extra for practicals, exams, or internships. For government colleges, the admission timeline is usually June-July, so there's a waiting period. Don't rush into a private college decision in panic; wait for all counselling rounds.

I did my MBBS from a state govt college in 2015 with a similar rank. Honestly, the experience was fantastic and the degree is identical. Yes, we paid capitation (~40L then), but over 5.5 years, spread across installments, it was manageable. The placements and respect are no different from private college grads. Just ensure the college has NAAC accreditation and decent clinical exposure—that matters more than the fee structure for future PG entrance exams.

Great question. With 550, you're likely looking at state government medical colleges or deemed universities in private sector. Government colleges have zero tuition (just ₹5-15K/year misc fees), but merit seats fill fast and management seats at govt colleges have huge capitation fees—sometimes 30-50 lakhs. Private colleges are transparent upfront but watch for bond clauses: some tie you to 2-3 years post-graduation service, which can hurt if your daughter wants to pursue higher studies abroad. My advice: get the exact bond terms in writing before committing.

Good question! Government college hostels are heavily subsidised—usually ₹2-5K/month for girls. Private colleges charge ₹8-15K/month for hostel. Also, bond penalties: most private colleges waive bonds if the student gets into a PG program immediately (like MD/MS at AIIMS or other top institutes), so that's a loophole many use. Confirm this in your agreement before signing.

OP here—thank you all for the clarity. I'm realizing I should ask the private colleges directly about bond penalties if my daughter can't complete the bond due to higher studies. Also, should I factor in hostel costs separately for government colleges, or are they subsidised?

Our son went through NEET counselling last year with a similar rank. We chose a government college despite the wait because the long-term financial burden was lower and the degree is equally valued. The bond clause at private colleges scared us—what if our kid wants to study abroad after MBBS? At least with govt college, no strings attached. Just my 2 paise based on our experience.

I'm currently in 2nd year at a private college and my fees are 18L total (paid at admission). The bond here is 1 year post-graduation in the college hospital, which honestly isn't bad—many students use that year to prep for PG entrance exams while earning a small stipend. My friend at a govt college had a tougher time with delayed admissions and hostel issues. Pick based on: (1) college's pass rate for PG exams, (2) hostel facilities, (3) actual bond length and consequences.
